The Dear One (Mae Marsh), a poor young woman, wants only to keep her husband (Robert Harron) and her baby, and prejudice is working to take them. D.W. Griffith cuts her story against three others, set in Babylon, Judea and sixteenth-century France, each in its own tint and linked by Lillian Gish rocking a cradle. Across all four, the cruelty comes from people certain they are in the right.
