Why would a newly elected president pin his hopes on a rugby team that most of his country wants nothing to do with? Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) takes office in a South Africa still split by apartheid, and he decides the Springboks, led by captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), can bring his people together. Clint Eastwood sets this against the 1995 Rugby World Cup, with the fragile peace of a whole nation riding on the team's run.
