John Bayley (Hugh Bonneville) is a shy, scholarly student who wants only to stay near Iris Murdoch (Kate Winslet), the confident, dominant woman he has fallen for. Richard Eyre moves between those early days and the couple in old age, with Iris (Judi Dench) losing her mind to Alzheimer's and John (Jim Broadbent) caring for her, worn thin, in their North Oxford home. The beach at Southwold, one of her favourite places, keeps coming back.
