(1987)Directed by Héctor Babenco143 min · RDrama
“Hard times and Good times. Francis and Helen.”

Francis Phelan (Jack Nicholson) is a drifter and a drunk who comes back to Albany, New York, for the first time in decades, arriving just in time for Halloween. He sleeps where he can and drinks with Helen Archer (Meryl Streep), a sick woman who travels the same cold streets he does. Héctor Babenco shot the film on location in Albany, so the town Francis left behind is the one on screen.
