Isle of the Dead

“A grave's dank darkness smothers the screams of a girl still alive!”

During the Balkan War of 1912, a group of strangers is shut up together on a small Greek island, cut off by quarantine against the plague. Among them is Madame Kyra (Helene Thimig), a superstitious old peasant who has decided that Thea (Ellen Drew) is a vampiric demon. General Pherides (Boris Karloff) listens, and Mark Robson, working for producer Val Lewton, keeps the island's few rooms close, with Böcklin's painting behind the opening credits.
