It Happened at the Inn

(1943)Directed by Jacques Becker104 minDrama, Mystery, Comedy

In 1943 France, the Goupis share a country inn and a long-standing stew of grudges, each relative with his own nickname and his own corner of the house. When the old woman who lives there is found dead, suspicion settles on her own family, and Jacques Becker moves among them one by one. Goupi-Mains rouges (Fernand Ledoux) knows these people better than the police do, and the question of which of them to trust gets harder with every meal at the table.
