Jane Osgood (Doris Day) runs a lobster business to support her two young children, and she can't afford to lose a single shipment. When railroad staff let one spoil, she turns to her lawyer George Denham (Jack Lemmon) and sues Harry Foster Malone (Ernie Kovacs), the man who runs the line and answers to the name "the meanest man in the world."
