In 1949, a university chemistry professor named Vernon Simpson (Ray Milland) stumbles onto a formula that makes a baseball veer away from any wood it meets. Lloyd Bacon follows him as he puts the discovery to work, with his catcher Monk Lanigan (Paul Douglas) in his corner. Back home sits Deborah Greenleaf (Jean Peters), who knows nothing of his plans, and whatever he is doing between them quietly rests on her.
