Summer has come around again for the Parkers, and Ralphie (Kieran Culkin) is hunting for the perfect top to use against the school bully. Meanwhile the Old Man (Charles Grodin) keeps up his feud with the hillbilly Bumpus neighbors, and Mother (Mary Steenburgen) collects a china set one glass at a time at the local movie theater. Bob Clark follows a household where everyone chases a small private mission, and the people in it still end up pulled toward one another.
