Why have Basil Underwood (Leslie Howard) and Joyce Arden (Bette Davis), two stage stars who play lovers every night, postponed their wedding eleven times? Archie Mayo sets the question loose when a debutante, Marcia West (Olivia de Havilland), falls for Basil and reopens the old feud between them. The couple keep scheming and quarreling in the same breath, and each trick to get away from the other only draws them closer.
