I've Heard the Mermaids Singing
“Isn't life the strangest thing you've ever seen?”
In Toronto in the late 1980s, Polly Vandersma (Sheila McCarthy) takes a job as a secretary at an art gallery run by Gabrielle St. Peres (Paule Baillargeon). Polly dreams of being a photographer and idolizes Gabrielle, until Mary Joseph (Ann-Marie MacDonald) arrives and Gabrielle takes up an old romance with her. Patricia Rozema tells it with a first-time director's handmade charm, and it became the first English-language Canadian feature to win an award at Cannes.
