Jamaica Inn

(1939)Directed by Alfred Hitchcock100 minCrime, Adventure
“He ruled Jamaica Inn...citadel of sin on the moors, curse-ridden, shunned, reviled. Enough sensations for a dozen pictures. Laughton at his most magnificent.”

Mary Yellan (Maureen O'Hara) is a young woman in early 19th-century Cornwall who goes to live with her aunt Patience (Marie Ney) and her uncle Joss (Leslie Banks) at the remote Jamaica Inn. She soon finds the place is a front for a gang of wreckers, men who lure ships onto the coast. Hitchcock sends her out across the moors, with Sir Humphrey Pengallan (Charles Laughton) nearby, and Mary has to decide how far she will go to survive.
