A painter leaves the city for a remote canyon, planning to end his life there, and asks only for a quiet place to stay first. He finds one at the farmstead of Ascen (Magdalena Flores), an old, devout woman who takes him in and says very little. Carlos Reygadas lets the two share the days in near silence, and a tenderness grows between the man (Alejandro Ferretis) and Ascen that neither of them names.
