Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) arrives at boot camp and is remade into a Marine by Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx). When he deploys to the Persian Gulf, Swofford becomes a sniper waiting for an order that may never come, watching the horizon with his spotter Troy (Peter Sarsgaard) through glass and heat shimmer. Sam Mendes tracks what happens to two men pressed together in the desert, where boredom and danger breed a bond neither can quite name or leave behind.
