“Welcome to the suck.”

Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) survives boot camp and ships out with his Marine unit to the Persian Gulf, ready to fight. The war keeps them back, and the weeks pass in the sand under Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx) while a letter from his girlfriend might be lying to him. Sam Mendes keeps Swofford close to Troy (Peter Sarsgaard), the fellow sniper who shares his waiting and his heat.
