Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc
Jeannette (Lise Leplat Prudhomme) is eight years old in 1425, minding her sheep in the village of Domremy while the English war grinds on across France. She tells her friend Hauviette (Lucile Gauthier) that she cannot bear the suffering it causes, and Madame Gervaise (Aline Charles), a nun, tries to talk her out of it. Bruno Dumont, adapting a 1910 play by Charles Péguy, sets all this to song, with the girls singing their grief in a field beside the sheep.
