Jefferson in Paris

(1995)Directed by James Ivory139 min · PG-13Drama, Romance, History
“A powerful man torn between his love for one woman and his secret desire for another.”

Thomas Jefferson (Nick Nolte) is a widower and a man of principle, sent to Paris as America's ambassador just before the Revolution. James Ivory sets him among a court that dines on excess while the peasants outside grow restless. He falls for the artist Maria Cosway (Greta Scacchi), then finds his attention drawn to Sally Hemings (Thandiwe Newton). The story sits in the gap between what Jefferson says he believes and how he lives.
