“Is anyone there?”

Sgt. John Berlin (Andy Garcia) leaves the LAPD for a small Northern California police force and has barely unpacked when a dead young woman turns up in the town. His new colleagues, including Freddy Ross (Lance Henriksen), wave off his theory that a serial killer is at work. Bruce Robinson follows Berlin as he chases it alone and grows close to Helena (Uma Thurman), a blind woman, until the case is all he has.
