“She did it... because her fear was greater than her shame!”

Helen Stilwin (Barbara Stanwyck) has only hours to find help for her husband Doug (Barry Sullivan), pinned on a beach as the tide comes in. The man she flags down is Lawson (Ralph Meeker), an escaped convict who takes her instead. John Sturges keeps the clock running through the black-and-white frames, and Doug lies far down the shore with the water creeping toward him.
