Jesse James (Tyrone Power) wants the family farm back after railroad agents drive his family off the land. With his brother Frank (Henry Fonda), he takes up banditry as revenge, and Henry King follows the two of them as they go from evicted farmers to wanted men. Through it all Jesse is courting Zee Cobb (Nancy Kelly), and her place beside him is what the outlaw life puts under strain.
