Madurai is where Sivan (Mohanlal) holds court, a powerful gangster whose word settles disputes for the whole district. His adopted son Shakthi (Vijay) hates the police, and Sivan asks him to put on the uniform anyway. Nesan builds the film on that request, a father's loyalty weighed against a son's contempt for a job he never wanted, and the pull between the two men.
