In New Mexico, a courthouse fire destroys the records proving that Mexican families own their land, and Luis Chama (John Saxon) urges them to take it back by force. Frank Harlan (Robert Duvall), a wealthy landowner who wants the same ground, hires a gang of killers and brings in Joe Kidd (Clint Eastwood), an ex-bounty hunter. John Sturges sets the hunt among the three men, with Kidd caught between the rancher paying him and the rebel he is paid to find.
