“History Needs Extraordinary Heroes”

In 1937, as Japanese forces close on Nanjing, John Rabe (Ulrich Tukur), a German businessman, prepares to leave China. Instead he stays and helps set up a safety zone for civilians, working alongside Dr. Robert Wilson (Steve Buscemi). Florian Gallenberger, adapting Rabe's own wartime diaries, keeps close to Rabe and his wife Dora (Dagmar Manzel), a marriage that has to hold while the city around them is lost.
