A man is dead after a heist in town, and Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge) has already decided who is to blame. She rallies the townsfolk against Vienna (Joan Crawford), who runs a saloon on the outskirts for the region's undesirables, with no proof to go on. Nicholas Ray follows Vienna as her old lover Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden) rides back in, and she holds her ground against a crowd that wants her gone.
