Howard Graham (Joseph Cotten) is an American ballistics expert in Turkey who wants nothing more than to get home to his wife, Stephanie (Ruth Warrick). Then Nazi agents mark him as a target, and passage home by ship is arranged. Norman Foster sends him up the gangway, and the men hunting him are already aboard, which leaves Howard a mild engineer with nowhere to go but the next cabin.
