“See It Now ! You'll Remember It Always !”

Mexico in the 1860s, with Napoleon III's French backing, has a new emperor. Maximilian (Brian Aherne) and his wife Carlota (Bette Davis) arrive to find a country that already follows Benito Juárez (Paul Muni), the president who has pledged himself to democracy. William Dieterle sets the two rulers on opposite sides of the same land, and the gap between Maximilian and Carlota widens as the crown they came to wear is refused.
