“In the Ghettos of Harlem you don't buy respect... you earn it.”

Four friends in Harlem decide to rob a convenience store, and Roland Bishop (Tupac Shakur), the one with the gun, will not hear that Quincy "Q" Powell (Omar Epps) has a DJ gig the same night. Q wants out of the corner life and into the booth, while Steel and Raheem go along with whatever Bishop says. Ernest R. Dickerson, who made his name behind the camera, keeps the shots tight on the four of them and the streets they know.
