Junior Bonner (Steve McQueen), a bronco rider whose best years are behind him, drives home to Prescott, Arizona, hoping to win the annual rodeo. He finds his father Ace (Robert Preston) drinking hard and his brother Curly (Joe Don Baker) cashing in on the family's name, while his mother Elvira (Ida Lupino) keeps her distance. Sam Peckinpah, better known for his violence, films the town and the arena in a warm, sun-faded light.
