“The Shadow of a man can never stand up and walk on its own.”

A thief is spared the cross for one reason: he looks exactly like Shingen Takeda (Tatsuya Nakadai), the warlord whose death the clan must hide from its rivals. Akira Kurosawa follows the nameless double as he is taught to walk, sit and speak like a man who commands armies, while Nobukado Takeda (Tsutomu Yamazaki) coaches him. By the end of the lesson the thief sits alone in a hall in the dead man's robes, still and straight-backed.
