“The Claustrophobic Nightmare of War”
In the last days of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, Lieutenant Zadra (Wieńczysław Gliński) leads what remains of his Resistance company down into the city's sewers. Andrzej Wajda sends them through the dark with Daisy (Teresa Iżewska) and Ensign Korab (Tadeusz Janczar) among them, and every way up leads back to the Nazis. Zadra keeps the group moving and keeps his orders steady, though the strain wears on him with each turn.
