“Kansas City, 1934. Anything could happen here. One night it did.”

Two kidnappings in 1930s Kansas City expose who really holds power in a town run by crooked deals and favors. Blondie O'Hara (Jennifer Jason Leigh) takes a desperate step to get her husband Johnny (Dermot Mulroney) back, and it brings her to Carolyn Stilton (Miranda Richardson), the wife of a powerful political man. Robert Altman lets the jazz play through the story, and the two women are bound to each other by the one thing each has taken.
