In a small American town, the country is still mourning a national hero killed when his car left the road. Stevie O'Malley (Spencer Tracy), a famed war correspondent, arrives to write the man's biography and finds a widow, Christine Forrest (Katharine Hepburn), who will not make it easy. George Cukor keeps the Forrest house closed and quiet, and Stevie starts asking questions nobody there wants to hear.
