Walter Gulick (Elvis Presley) comes home from the army and takes a job as a sparring partner at a boxing gym, where the hits come fast and the pay is small. Gig Young plays Willy Grogan (Gig Young), the gym's owner, who sees a professional fighter in the quiet newcomer and takes him on. Phil Karlson sets Walter between Willy's ambitions and the people around the ring, and the stakes are Walter's own future.
