“How do you escape… what you can't resist?”

Alice (Heather Graham) meets Adam (Joseph Fiennes) by chance, and within days they are tangled in a relationship that moves faster than she can think. She marries him, then starts to hear about the women who came before her, and what she learns does not fit the man she lives with. Chen Kaige, in his only English-language film, leaves Alice alone with her doubts and his closed bedroom door.
