Maria (Nonna Mordyukova) leaves her village and travels to the city to see her daughter Nina (Svetlana Kryuchkova), and she means to stay long enough to set things right. Nikita Mikhalkov follows her through the cramped apartment, where three generations of women share a kitchen and old resentments. Mother and daughter keep talking past each other, each sure she is the one who has been wronged.
