Private Arthur Hamp (Tom Courtenay) is a quiet British soldier on the Western Front in the First World War, now charged with desertion. Captain Hargreaves (Dirk Bogarde) is handed his defence at the court-martial and starts to suspect the case holds more than the charge sheet says. Joseph Losey keeps it to a few rooms and a few officers, and a man's life depends on what they decide.
