King Lear

King Lear (Anthony Hopkins) announces he is stepping down and splits his kingdom among his three daughters, asking each to say how much she loves him. Goneril (Emma Thompson) and Regan (Emily Watson) answer with flattery, while Cordelia (Florence Pugh) tells him the plain truth and is cast out. Richard Eyre sets the story in a militarised modern London, and what runs under it is a father who cannot hear the one daughter who loves him.
