Erling (Benjamin Helstad), known to the institution as C-19, arrives on Bastøy island in the winter of 1915 with one plan, which is to get off it. The place is a reform home for boys aged eleven to eighteen, run by the governor Håkon (Stellan Skarsgård) and a regime of sadistic discipline. Marius Holst builds the film from true events, showing how far boys will go against men who hold all the power.
