In Africa at the start of the 1900s, Elizabeth Curtis (Deborah Kerr) goes looking for a guide to take her into the interior, where her husband has gone missing. She finds Allan Quartermain (Stewart Granger), a fortune hunter who agrees to lead the way, with a rival German explorer and hostile tribes on their trail. Compton Bennett and Andrew Marton send the party across land that looks bleached and scorched by the sun.
