A blacksmith named Balian de Ibelin (Orlando Bloom) is summoned to the Crusades and inherits a fortress in Jerusalem. He arrives in a city burning with religious fervor, where zealots push toward war with Saladin (Ghassan Massoud). Balian must navigate between his mentor Tiberias (Jeremy Irons) and the king's sister Sibylla (Eva Green), a woman bound by duty to a man she despises. What Balian discovers is that mercy and military strength are not opposites.
