“Sex. Murder. Mystery. Welcome to the party.”

Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) is a petty thief who stumbles into an audition and gets flown to Los Angeles to play a detective. To prepare, he is paired with Gay Perry (Val Kilmer), a real private eye, and reunited with Harmony (Michelle Monaghan), the girl he had a crush on in high school. Then a body turns up, and Shane Black, adapting a 1941 Brett Halliday novel, narrates the whole mess through Harry's own wisecracking voice.
