How did people reach the islands of Polynesia from so far away? Thor Heyerdahl (Pål Sverre Hagen) believes South Americans sailed there on balsa wood in pre-Columbian times, and in 1947 he sets out to prove it. He gathers a small crew, including Herman Watzinger (Anders Baasmo Christiansen) and Knut Haugland (Tobias Santelmann), and puts a raft into the Pacific. Rønning and Sandberg film the voyage in its true setting of open water, with the crew small against it.
