Krakatoa, East of Java

Captain Chris Hanson (Maximilian Schell) has a salvage crew, a sunken ship, and a cargo of pearls waiting on the seabed in 1883. Close to the wreck sits Krakatoa, a volcano that is starting to rumble and smoke, and Hanson sails for it anyway with Laura Travers (Diane Baker) among his passengers. Bernard L. Kowalski stages the voyage as a disaster picture, with the effects work earning the film an Academy Award nomination.
