Kuhle Wampe or Who Owns the World?

Anni (Hertha Thiele) wants a life of her own in Berlin in the early 1930s, but the headlines are all about rising unemployment. After her brother's death and the family's eviction, the Bönickes move to Kuhle Wampe, a tent colony on the city's edge. Slatan Dudow made it with Bertolt Brecht's script, and it asks plainly who profits from hunger, using strangers on a train arguing over coffee prices.
