“Beware what lurks in the bamboo forest craving the blood of samurai!”

Samurai returning from the civil war keep turning up dead along one stretch of road, their throats torn out. The governor sends Gintoki (Kichiemon Nakamura II), a fierce young warrior, to stop whatever is killing them, and the trail leads toward two women, Yone (Nobuko Otowa) and Shige (Kiwako Taichi), who died at the hands of soldiers. Kaneto Shindō gives the killings a patient, still dread, and what Gintoki cannot yet see is how closely he is tied to the dead.
