Kwaidan

“In the tradition of "RASHOMON" and "GATE OF HELL."”

The title is an old Japanese word for ghost story, and the film holds four of them, taken from Lafcadio Hearn's folktales. A penniless samurai marries for money, a blind musician named Hoichi is made to play for an audience of ghosts, and a man caught in a blizzard is saved by Yuki the Snow Maiden. Masaki Kobayashi keeps the spirits as indifferent as the weather, so every human who crosses one stands to lose a marriage, a life, or a promise.
