Lulu (Didier Bezace) is a Paris narcotics detective who still works with a rookie's faith, though his squad runs short of cars, paper and colleagues who care. He and his partner Dodo (Jean-Paul Comart) chase street dealers through a city of bureaucracy, and Lulu holds on to his sanity as he sees the worst of people. Tavernier films the stakeouts and station-house routines in documentary detail, so the job feels like work before it feels like drama.
