“Born into poverty. Destined for stardom. He lived the American dream.”

Ritchie Valens (Lou Diamond Phillips) is a Los Angeles teenager in 1958 whose love ballad "Donna," written for his girlfriend Donna Ludwig (Danielle von Zerneck), turns him into an overnight rock 'n' roll success. His jealous half-brother Bob (Esai Morales) resents every step of the climb. Luis Valdez follows Ritchie toward his first national tour with Buddy Holly, while a recurring nightmare of a plane crash keeps returning.
