La Chienne

(1931)Directed by Jean Renoir96 minDrama, Crime

In Paris in 1931, Maurice Legrand (Michel Simon) is a cashier who goes home each night to his wife Adèle, a woman who gives him nothing but contempt. One chance meeting leads him to Lucienne, called Lulu (Janie Marèse), whom he takes as his mistress and believes he has finally found love with. Jean Renoir makes the story about what a lonely man will believe to keep a feeling alive, while Lulu is a streetwalker still devoted to her pimp.
