Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a jazz pianist in Los Angeles, meets Mia (Emma Stone), an actress working coffee shifts while auditioning for roles. They fall into each other's orbit, trading late-night drives and songs, each believing the other might be the reason to stay. Chazelle shoots their ambition and desire in bright, aching color, but Sebastian learns that loving someone and wanting the same future are not always the same choice.
