In the Belleville district of Paris, Édith Piaf grows up in her grandmother's brothel, a girl who sings to survive. In 1935 the nightclub owner Louis Leplée finds her and coaxes her onto a stage, though her nerves nearly keep her off it. Olivier Dahan follows Marion Cotillard through the decades, and the film keeps landing on her small figure alone in the limelight.
